Diving Careers with PADI and Ocean Spirit in Mauritius

Mauritius is one of the few diving destinations where the local population loves recreational diving. As the nation that controls the entire Mascarene Plateau, scuba diving in Mauritius can also become an exciting and rewarding career and PADI is offering enticing options to make scuba diving more affordable. The great news is that Ocean Spirit has established a Scuba Diver Training Centre under government auspices for local Mauritians and GAP year students.

MAURITIUS WITH ITS INDIAN OCEAN TERRITORIES

In many countries, scuba diving has been a nomadic career, where a young diver will get hooked while on a Gap Year or sabbatical and decide to leave his land locked country and a conventional living for a precarious career in the diving industry. But this is changing, with the massive economic inputs from the equipment suppliers who actively promote scuba diving and have created a demand for trained experts. PADI has led the way, with a massive marketing campaign following COVID to rebuild the industry and encourage professional training. Ocean Spirit is honored to be a PADI 5 Star centre, Green Star Centre and PADI ECO Centre- with Greens Fins

A diving career can start humbly. with filling and carrying tanks, while you are allowed to dive free of charge in compensation. Once you build up enough dives you can start training for Emergency First Response. Next stage is to become a Rescue Diver, then you can train as a dive master. After a few years of leading dives, next career move is to Instructor. A few rare, brilliant divers can become PADI Course Directors, and train other instructors. You might open your own diving centre, dive shop or training centre. Its a great career, which allows the diver to go through a clear path as he ages. Scuba diving offers careers in videography, photography, seamanship, business ownership- the list is long.

PROFESSIONAL INTERNET VIDEOGRAPHER

Ian Haggerty is a professional photographer, adapted to being a marine videographer, where he has rapidly become a highly regarded Influencer.

At Ocean Spirit we started by training Bernard, who was a boat skipper. With his vast understanding of marine creatures acquired in a shipping trawler as a youth a diving career suits him perfectly.

When Ocean Spirit joined PADI Project Aware in 2017 and began publishing articles about Mauritius and Conservation in the Diving press, our Head of Diving Chevandrasing Boodum ( Bobby) began divemaster training with Bernard. We soon needed a new skipper- Bernard proved his passion for diving by becoming one of the best loves Training dive masters in Mauritius

BERNARD FLORE MUCH LOVED TRAINING DIVEMASTER

Jean Miguel Fernando Nagain (Nando) came as a tank filler and boat boy when he was 17. He started filling and carrying tanks loading the boat helping the skipper and he spent every cent on courses, as he spoke no English, and had limited education. He became our Tec Rec Officer- then began his video training, then his Dive Master training. This year he qualified as a PADI OWSI Instructor. Once he bought a GoPro, he began to make videos, and now he is also a popular TikTok influencer.
