The 2024 Mauritian Election vs The American Election
It seems that freedom speech in the United States is not restricted to speech. In includes all social media outlets, video, action and shooting. Mauritius certainly does this better.
The American Election
In the United States the language of one candidate Donald Trump is becoming more crude, more aggressive more threatening and less comprehensible. I think he is a retrogressive thug, and I really hope he does not win the US Presidency again. He has found a bottomless pit of US Dollars in the form of South African compatriot Elon Musk who seems to believe that population control is irrelevant, that the world needs more people and plans to use his fiery penile extensions to rid the earth of surplus people while breeding like a rabbit himself.
On the other hand, Kamala Harris honors her heritage with calm reasoned arguments and a message of hope. I sincerely hope she wins, and carries the values of her Hindu mother into the US population and brings calm and reason back into the world. Her mentor Joe Biden has quietly continued to govern and build his own legacy- the USA is back as an economic power house.
The Mauritian Election
The 2024 election in Mauritius is proceeding exactly in accordance with protocol. There are several parties all hoping for a seat at the table at the end of the election. Mauritius is an inclusive democracy, where the winning party can distribute cabinet positions among the other parties so that we get the best qualified people to do the work, reap the benefits and enjoy a little prestige.
In a primarily Hindu Island the most popular Hindu party is likely to win, although the minority parties are always hopeful. The way to victory was paved with government increases in wages, multiple appearances at every gathering, huge rallies that entertain the local population on weekends and Public Holidays, and of course a bit of mud slinging between the heads of the parties. It is civilized, conducted with organization and respect, and normally proceeds very smoothly.
I have witnessed 4 elections in Mauritius now, and I have always been impressed with the calmly civilized manner in which they are conducted. Normally the rival parties string bunting alongside one another, which brighten up the streets and make the island look festive.
Our political candidates
This year there was a slight change. This is the first election where the Internet has played a significant role- this year, there was a security breach of government telecons. Confidential conversations and international calls was published on social media. We woke up on Friday morning without YouTube, with no Facebook, no Twitter and TikTok was dead. The Mauritius press was filled with speculation, with accusations, with suspicion. The international press took a break from the United States Election to speculate whether this shut down was related to the Election.
Of course the culprit was found, the guy was arrested, the messages were deleted and on Saturday morning life returned to normal. Our politicians want to make our lives better, safer and more beautiful
The last election in 2020 was while the island was in COVID shut down, the Prime Minister had recently taken over the reins from his father, and his position was tenuous. There was a huge demonstration in Port Louis, which I posted in a video. I filmed the demonstration, but since it was showing bales of cane bagasse on all the public buildings, I being an idiot thought it was to celebrate the end of the oil spill cleanup from the Wakashio. The guy at the end of the video is a militant activist- big mistake.
It was fortunate that I did mis-understand the purpose of the demonstration, because at that time Mauritius was a focus of the attention of a world in Lockdown, and the message of revolution and revolt in a registered International Investment Hub could have been catastrophic.I was writing about the exceptional action of the population in cleaning up the oil spill, and that story was a huge success, but to this day, the opposition is not my friend.
